It was so interesting to see the business side of Elisabeth and John after getting to know them more personally over the last year. My parents WERE also entrepreneurs and I, like Lisa, went completely in the opposite direction — I like a steady paycheck! My brother did get a little bit of Dad in him though and has dabbled in starting his own business. Elisabeth, do any of your siblings have their own business or was your self employment more due to John’s side of things?

I am stepping back at the end of December which will leave me with two part-time roles: director of communications for a consulting business my husband and I co-own, and a student support coordinator at a university. More details here. […]

I think Kyria’s parents were entrepreneurs as well? I remember you telling me about learning to sleep through one ring tone and wake up for another. That’s an incredible skill, Lisa!!

I have the same feeling about homeschooling that you have about knowing you didn’t want to be an entrepreneur after watching your parents. I was homeschooled for about 4 years and HATED it. My own kids (well, one of them) has asked to be homeschooled and I just can’t even imagine. My worst nightmare!

I’m really proud of what we did and that it really was a team effort. While John was the main engine behind things, I know it would never have gotten off the ground without me and that is a satisfying feeling! That said, I’m glad those early years are in the rearview mirror…

I have gotten to know Elisabeth well now through our blog and emailing/whatsapp but I didn’t know much about the companies they co-founded! My parents were entrepreneurs, too. They ran a heating and electrical business together after my dad bought out his employer. We had a business line that rang in our house at all hours of the day. When I was a teen, I trained myself to sleep through the business line ring tone and wake for the house line ring tone. My parents took very few vacation and worked so many hours. It is not for the faint of heart and not every marriage can weather something like that. They just retired in the last couple of years around age 73. Funnily, being raised by entrepreneurs solidified that I wanted a different life for myself! I like being an employee and getting a paycheck and having a defined PTO policy and parental leave, etc. That said, my sister’s husband decided to take the business over and started that process over 10 years ago. I think they are structuring their lives differently so they have more balance and she is not involved with the business like my mom was.

Thanks for reading, J! This is a “different” side that I don’t discuss much on the blog, but clearly a big part of our broader family/marital story!
