@Caitlin- I will probably pick up Mr. Penumbra eventually – hopefully it’s different enough that I won’t feel like I just read the same book again though…

@Phil- I always love when the craft is so good it overwhelms the topic!

@Katherine – maybe if you do some really really short books? A Christmas Carol. Ann Patchet’s Getaway Car is a short writers-on-writing book. Maybe some fables. Or What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast 🙂

@Meghan – she doesn’t belabor her own life too much in the book, but the snippets about her professional experiences showed that she is really, really good at what she does. An interesting insight into what it takes to make radio work.

@Any S – woo hoo! You can do it! There’s something incredibly satisfying about making it through a really long book. And you definitely feel like you are in that world.

It’s weirdly familiar in that a lot of the music he references, I recall from my own 1980s childhood and I had a vague awareness of The Troubles. It’s very much of it’s time and place – almost historical fiction. The narration is entertaining too. There is a lot of swearing and black humour.

In kids books, I’m currently reading Nevermoor (which is great so far)

I was inspired by your reading this year to take the plunge into this 800+ page book!

It’s one of those books that is in my molecules now 🙂 I read A Circle of Quiet when my oldest son was a few months old and I was going through a 30-yo existential crisis, and found it enormously comforting. Since that’s not your stage now, maybe one of the other Crosswicks books will speak to you more!
.
I didn’t know Headlee had a book – I live in Georgia, and love her show. On Second Thought is one of the very best regional news shows out there, not least because she and her guests tackle national issues, too. If anyone wants to listen, I recommend the Friday break room panel format – it’s always fantastic (it’s available as a podcast).

Yesterday I debated if I could bust a$$ and get to 100 before the year is over… That would be a lot of December reading for me.

This month I read seven books and my favorites were: The Four Tendencies (G Rubin), Eleanor Oliphat is Completely Fine (thought it would be quirky and endearing like A Man Called Ove, but was not.), and The Underground Railroad (I started and paused on that one several times because it is heavy, but am happy to have read it).

I always love book recommendations! And felt exactly the same about Crossing to Safety. I texted my friend to ask if I should keep going because the first stretch of it dragged. But I really liked it!

I thought this would be a morbid book about an obscure topic, but she is such a brilliant writer/researcher that she made it a real page turner!
