I bought a musty old copy at a used bookstore many years ago without knowing anything about the book or the author. Her story telling really does transport you to another place and time.

I had just finished reading Didion’s book and was going to St Johns Divine for a concert. Now knowing John and Daughter are entombed by the front alter, the concert became the second thing on my mind. But my water heater broke and had to forgo the concert. Hoping to have another chance soon.

@Brianna- 39 (or 40!) is nothing to sneeze at. That puts you in the top 1 percent of the population, I’d imagine!

Have you read Elizabeth Jane Howard’s five Cazalet Chronicles books? Howard follows multiple generations in a family before, during and after WWII. The family is fairly wealthy and in book #1, “The Light Years” the adult children gather at their parents’ house (the parents/grandparents are fondly referred to as the Duchy and the Brig) in the countryside in anticipation of war. I read this series during maternity leave last spring and the characters have stuck with me.
