My son is turning 10 at the end of the month, and I think he’s an awesome almost-10-year-old, but I miss him as a baby, and a toddler, and a preschooler, and a 6-year-old. I do know where the time went, and a decade is a really long time, but I still feel like it went too fast.

@Jamie- virtue went out with hair powder! That’s funny. Yep, the ancient Greeks complained about their students. Young people have always annoyed old people. Probably vice versa too 🙂

Enjoyed the WSJ review. Recently I have been grousing about millennials myself — I had a doozy of a finals week, with a couple of memorably difficult conversations with students (<- euphemism alert!). Living on the edge of a college campus also means I have a front seat for antics which bring out my inner curmudgeon, like texting while skateboarding.

I am indulging in my annual post-finals escape, during which I read one of the fat Dickens novels in what's left of May. I was amused to read about the tavern guests who insisted "that virtue went out with hair-powder." Their pessimism seems to have been unwarranted, so perhaps I should tamp mine down as well.

@Cloud- thanks for the book suggestion! I’m having a fun time sort of letting my interests dictate whatever I read next…

And happy 10th anniversary of motherhood to you. Eric Barker was the keynote speaker at a conference I spoke at a couple of weeks ago. He was a really good speaker, and I was sorry to have missed the first part of his talk while I was getting registered as a speaker. I was particularly intrigued by his discussion of self-compassion, which he was almost done with when I came in. I wondered if it was covered in his book. Now that I know it is, maybe I’ll pick it up! And since you’re looking for a Genghis Khan bio: I read Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World, by Jack Weatherford, several years ago and really liked it.
