They’ve helped me focus on finding time to exercise, which I’d been saying since the baby was born was a priority but I wasn’t actually doing. When today’s exercise plans fell through (weightlifting at the gym), I found a substitute (pilates at home for half an hour, baby hanging out beside me, drooling on my mat). Not the epic workout I’d planned, but it was the second this week. One more by Saturday and I’ll have three!

@Christine – it is definitely a mind-set shift. My older boys will definitely stay up later than me, easy. But they are also perfectly capable of fending for themselves so it’s fine for me to grab time to myself or to shut the door and have an adult conversation with my husband even if they’re awake. Likewise, Leah had been in the mindset that she needed to exercise early, when she had coverage for the kids, but that’s not actually true once they’re old enough!

@Kate – if you exercise 3 times a week, it’s a habit! Maybe start by going 1-2 times a week, and doing something else on another day (there are a lot of online barre-type workouts if you wanted to do something at home). Getting up one morning a week for a barre class will feel fairly doable. Whereas daily, not so much….

When they were really little I kept thinking we’d have more time once they got older so this came as a surprise which made it even harder. As ours have entered the teen years and want to just hang out in their rooms alone sometimes we try to be intentional about our time together when we realize they’ve both ditched us. 😊
